Yesterday when I was walking through Freedom Park at dusk , I took photos of some of the beautiful water birds that stand regally by the pond’s edge. As majestic as I find birds , I have learned that proposing a bird painting or wallpaper to a client can have very mixed reactions. People love or hate birds.
Birds have long held both our fascination and repulsion. Long before the 1963 Hitchcock film “The Birds” (one of my all time favorites) , many humans have suffered from Ornithophobia -the fear of birds. This bird -fright has carried over into my experiences as an Interior Designer . I have had several clients who do not want a single bird fabric , wallcovering , or accessory in their home. It actually can be very hard to avoid bird images when you are doing a Tropical design theme. On the other hand , there are have been clients that were bird -gaga , you had to try to put the brakes on the number of bird pictures , pillows , and vases that were nesting all over the house.
Birds have very different representations associated with them. A Raven or Crow can be a messenger of death. The Bald Eagle is used by Americans as the symbol of freedom. We think of the wise Owl. In dreams birds hatching is delayed success , and chirping birds is suggestive of joy.
My personal experience with birds has been varied as well , I have been atatcked by Crows when out walking , and when at the farm as a small child learned how hissing and nasty a grabby Goose can be. On the other hand as a lover of nature I am forever fascinated by our fabulous Florida birds with their beautiful plummage.
A male Cardinal once fell in love with our daughter Angelique. Every time she would go on the lanai , the Cardinal would suddenly appear and sit in a nearby bush to stare at her with great devotion. The bird would creep closer and closer struggling to get her attention. This went on over several seasons , and the Cardinal only was interested in her.
One thing important in Florida to learn about birds is that they can not see glass , something we have in great abundance. When they fly into your sliders , this is not an attack , it is because your glass is invisible to them. Use decals or other precautions if there is a problem.
My clients Ted and Mary have recently had a large group of black birds gather on the roof of the house across the way….. I say , Run , Mary , Run !
