Color Blocking is one of those on-and -off again Fashion Trends , that certainly has swept through the summer of 2011. The black dress with white squared shoulders , the camel blouse with red sides. Bold contrasts in bright or non-colors that make everyone take a second look at your ensemble.
In Interior Design Color Blocking is a quick and dramatic fix for a room with the blahhs . It can be accomplished in various ways and involves some simple principles of rhythm , balance , and focal points.
Color Blocking works most successfully by uses Analogous hues , or ones that are next to each other on the color wheel such as yellow , yellow-orange , and orange. Also blacks, whites , and greys look dramatic together. Again , it can be Op Art like , or even subtle in the impact.
Paint is an effective way to introduce Color Blocking into your space. Right now I am painting a small bath’s ceiling Porter 355-3 Turquoise Mist. I carry this color 2 feet down from the ceiling onto the wall surface where it meets up with Porter 209-3 Aloe Vera. This puts a boxed lid effect on the room by forming a line of demarcation 2 feet from the true ceiling line. This will shorten the height of a room , and is best used where there is good volume in the room. Another trick I like to use with paint and Color Blocking is picture framing a piece of art with white wall molding , then painting about 8-12 of surrounding wall (the “matte”) , a contrasting color around the artwork. Frame , color , art work.
Color Blocking is also easily accomplished by the introduction of a bold rug and 3 large bright colored pillows in a neutral room. Jazz up your White Boutique Style Guest Bedroom by painting the walls a Lime Green and adding two 24” square Sunny Yellow pillows on the bed. Hang 3-4 pictures of different colors down a hall to develop a wonderful rhythm
that will lead your eye into a family room. It is both a color and numbers game , and one that makes you a sure winner.
Experience and Experiment Color Blocking . Check it out in both fashion and home interior magazines. It is fast , fun , and fabulous, and today!
